Green Left and GPEx Elections

The ballot papers for this year’s GPEx elections will be going out to members from Monday. This year only two posts will be contested by postal ballot of all members, nominations for the other two posts will be reopened at conference. The two posts being contested are those of Chair and External Communications Coordinator. There are two candidates for Chair – Jayne Forbes and Rayyan Mirza and two for External Comms Tracy Dighton Brown and Rupert Read/Jason Kitcat (jobshare).

The Steering Group of Green Left considered these nominations at its meeting this week and we took the decision unanimously to give critical support to Jayne Forbes as Chair and Tracy Dighton-Brown for Ex Comms. So we are calling upon Green Left members to give them their support. It is, of course, up to individual members as to how they vote in these elections, but this is the recommendation of the Steering Group taking into consideration what we feel is best for the future of the party.

  1. Blimey, I find myself in the unusual position of wholeheartedly agreeing with Green Left! ;)

  2. Well Sue, just because we might have differing ideological positions does not mean that we cannot agree at times on what is best for the party. Tracy is a strong supporter of openness and diversity - see the statements from the Disability Spokesperson and many of those in the party most active on women's rights and the LGBTIQ Spokespersons are also supportive.

She also stands in marked contrast to the arrogance and cliquishness of the self selected 'elite' on the other side.

I also happen to know, as do some others, that she was literally working flat out for the party at her father's deathbed this year, while receiving the most appalling emails from people close to the other candidates, which to my mind constituted harassment.

I would also suggest that they follow their own often quoted pledge to pursue a clean campaign, which they are clearly not doing at present.

  3. Great text about the Irish Greens in the Australian "Green Left," Joseph!

  4. There's probably not a huge difference in our ideological standpoints - I think it's often more style and semantics than substance, at least that's what we generally find when we try to iron out any disagreements within our cllr group. I agree that the negative campaigning currently being engaged in by certain quarters is pretty shoddy.
