LGBT Choral Festival

Every four years a major European city hosts the 'Various Voices' Festival, where lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans choirs from around the world perform. This weekend it was London's turn, and the South Bank Centre was transformed into a mini LGBT village, with choirs from Germany, Ireland, Canada and many from the UK performing.

I went along yesterday afternoon to hear a friend sing in The Rainbow Chorus a LGBT choir from Brighton who sang a very political repetoire, with songs from Brecht and Eisler and a wonderful number I had not heard before called 'Homophobia' which is their theme song apparently.

I took the opportunity of campaigning for the European election there, distributing many of Jean Lambert's leaflets. I found a strong response in support of the Greens and many LGBT people there only too well aware of how important it is to stop the BNP. Many of them also sing in community choirs with a strong politcal basis.

Also heard the wonderful Vancouver Men's Chorus on their first tour outside North America in their 28 year history. The festival was on all weekend but unfortunately I could only hear yesterday's performances. Will be doing further campaigning with the LGBT community in London between now and June 4th.
